The Chief human resource officer (CHRO) of Unilever, Leena Nair has been named the Global CEO of French luxury brand Chanel making the Kolhapur born 52 year old Nair the second Indian-origin woman to be named a global CEO after Indra Nooyi who was named the CEO of PepsiCo. An alumna of XLRI Jamshedpur, Leena joined Unilever in 1992 and was the first female and youngest ever Chief human resource officer. A statement from Chanel said that Alain Wertheimer who is the current owner will assume the role of the global executive chairman while Nair will take up the role of the global CEO and will be based in London,UK. It also stated that the new partnership “will further ensure long term success as a private company,believing in the freedom of creation, cultivating human potential and acting to have a positive impact in the world”.
The French luxury brand with an estimated value of $10 billion competes with global firms like Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Gucci, Michael Kors, L’oreal to name a few.
