The proposal to raise the age of marriage for women from 18 to 21 made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his speech on Independence day last year was cleared by the cabinet on Wednesday. The proposal was backed by the NITI aayog taskforce headed by Jaya Jaitly. The taskforce which was set up in June last year consisted of Top Government expert VK Paul, senior officials of Ministry of Women and child development, Health Ministry and Law ministry as it’s members.
The Prime Minister in his statement said ” This Government is constantly concerned about the health of the daughters and sisters. To save the daughters from malnutrition, it is necessary that they are married at the right age.” In order to bring the plan into action, the Government is planning on making amendments to the Special Marriage Act, The Hindu marriage act and the Prohibition of Child marriage act.
